Mike Giampetruzzi enters his fith season as Head Football Coach and 19th season overall on the Crusaders staff. He has compiled a 33-12 record through his first four seasons including the 2009 NVL Championship and Copper Division Championship and a 2011 Class S State Championship and Copper Division Championship. Coach Giampetruzzi also reached the playoffs in his first season, the 8th appearance all-time and 4th appearance since 2004. Coach Giampetruzzi was named the 2011 BAGS Foundation coach of the year.
Coach Giampetruzzi played his football under former coach Jerry Ciarleglio, now the Holy Cross Athletic Director, from 1991-1994. He was an All-city and All-NVL Linebacker for the Crusaders and lone captain of the 1994 team. Coach Giampetruzzi began his coaching career in 1995 after a short stint as a player at Central Connecticut State University, which ended due to a knee injury. He coached the Defensive Ends and Offensive Line from 1995-2003 before becoming the Defensive Coordinator in 2004. From 2004 - 2010, Giampetruzzi's Defense was ranked amongst the tops in the Naugatuck Valley League and has only given up an average of 16.6 ppg in that span. Coach Giampetruzzi will focus on the defense in 2013.
Coach Giampetruzzi is also the Assistant Principal for Student Life at Holy Cross and an assistant baseball coach. Coach Giampetruzzi received his Bachelor's from Central Connecticut State University in Psychology and his Master's from Southern Connecticut State University in School Health Education. He currently resides in Prospect with his wife Daniela and their two sons, R.J. and Vincent.

Matt Smolley '05
Matt Smolley returns for his 4th season as Offensive Coordinator and 9th season overall. Coach Smolley played his high school football under former head coach Mike Phelan, where he was a standout wide receiver and kick-returner as well as a Co-Captain on the 2004 team. Coach Smolley was a two-time All-City and All-NVL Wide Reciever and also earned the Mambruno Award for being the City of Waterbury's Most Outstanding Senior during the 2004 season. He began his coaching career in 2005 as the Wide Receiver coach for the Varsity Squad and remained in that capacity until 2010 when he was named Offensive Coordinator.
Coach Smolley's Receivers were amongst the top in the NVL and the State of Connecticut from 2005-2007. The Crusaders were 26-5 during that stretch which included two state playoff appearances, the school's first state championship, and two conference championship games.
During the school day Coach Smolley serves as a Physical Education teacher at Holy Cross, he also serves as the Indoor and Outdoor Boy's Track coach. Coach Smolley currently resides in Seymour.

Chris Mullins will be returning for his second season on the Holy Cross Football Staff. Chris, a graduate of Watertown High School was a two way starter for Watertown before his graduation in 2007. Upon graduation Chris went on to play college football at Western New England. During his time at WNE, Chris was a four year starter at OT. In his senior season he played on the team that won the 2011 New England Football Conference championship. He would later be named the 2011 Western New England offensive player of the year. Coach Mullins graduated with a B.S. in Criminal Justice. Coach Mullins will primarily be focusing on offensive line and defensive ends.
Coach Mullins currently works as a security guard at St. Mary’s Hospital. He currently resides in Watertown.
Head Freshman Coach
Ryan Gobstein ‘12
Ryan Gobstein returns for his second season on the Holy Cross Football staff. Ryan is a graduate of the class of 2012, and a member of the 2011 Class S State Championship Team. In his first season, Ryan coached both of the Sub-Varsity teams. Coach Gobstein served as both the Freshmen and JV Defensive Coordinator. In addition to his coaching responsibilities he has also served as one of the main coordinators of the Off-Season Strength and Conditioning Program. Coach Gobstein will primarily be focusing on both the Sub-Varsity Teams as well as the interior defensive line.
Coach Gobstein is currently pursuing a career in education and is currently enrolled at Central Connecticut State University as a Physical Education major. He currently resides in Middlebury.
Eric Barbarito '87
Eric Barbarito will enter his 6th season with the Holy Cross Football Staff as an Offensive Assistant. Coach Barbarito played his football under former head coach Jim Shove and was part of the 1985 team that went on to play Wilbur Cross in the State Championship. A team that Barbarito's father was the Head Coach of at the time. Barbarito played the Offensive Line where he was All-State during the 1986 season.
Coach Barbarito went on to take over the football program at Hillhouse High School out of New Haven. The Academics went from 0-11 to 11-1 and captured a State Championship. Hillhouse won 2 State Championships under Barbarito's reign at the helm. Two of Barbarito's assistants, Tom Dyer and Joe Stochmal have gone on to programs of their own thanks to Barbarito's tutelage. Dyer winning the 2010 CIAC Class M Championship with Hillhouse, and Stochmal beginning his own Varsity program at Oxford High School.
Coach Barbarito is currently an Assistant Principal with the New Haven Public School system at Wilbur Cross High School. He currently resides in Naugatuck.
Jerry Ciarleglio '72
Jerry Ciarleglio enters his 10th Season as Athletic Director at Holy Cross. Prior to being named Athletic Director, taking over for former AD James Cunningham, Ciarlelgio was the Head Coach for the football team from 1989-1999 where he posted a 73-45-1 record with two Naugatuck Valley League Championships (1991, 1996) and three CIAC State Playoff Appearances (1995, 1996, 1999).
Coach Ciarleglio currently sits as the Vice President of the Naugatuck Valley League and has also coached Boys' and Girls' Outdoor Track & Field during his time at Holy Cross. Prior to Holy Cross, Ciarleglio coached and was a teacher at Notre Dame - West Haven, the brother school to Holy Cross. He coached Football and Track & Field there while teaching English. Ciarleglio came to Holy Cross in 1989 to take the Head Football job and also teach in the English Department. He was also the Assistant Director of Students for a period of time at Holy Cross.
Ciarleglio received his Bachelor's Degree in English from Southern Connecticut State University, as well as his Master's Degree from Southern Conneciticut State University in English. He currently resides in Waterbury with his wife Teresa, and their children Christopher, Adam, Katie, and Sarah, all whom attended Holy Cross.
Erik Lanese A.T.C.
Erik Lanese will enter his 17th season on the sidelines as the Crusaders Athletic Trainer. Lanese began in 1996 and has since helped thousands of our Student-Athletes with Rehabilitation from injuries ranging from minor ankle sprains to full-blown ACL Tears. Laneses' certifications include NATA BOC Certification in Athletic Training, Connecticut Licensed A.T.C. as well as a CATA member.
Education courses that Lanese has completed include Cyriax, McKenzie, Mulligan. He has also been involved with Functional Rehabilitation in regards to Sports Medicine and Post-Surgical Rehabilitation. Lanese has worked with athletes on the Professional, Collegiate and of course, High School Levels.
Lanese is a graduate of Watertown High School and along with his other certifications, received his Bachelor's Degree from Central Connecticut State University in Sports Medicine. Lanese currently resides in Watertown with his wife, Shelley and their children Kyle (4) and Colin (1)
